Literary Essay
We wrote a Literary Essay analysing rhe novel "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", by Robert Louis Stevenson, which had to have between 350 and 400 words aproximately.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
“The
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, written by Robert Louis Stevenson,
talks about a man called Dr. Henry Jekyll who wants to discover his other
personality. He makes many experiments to achieve his aim. Finally, he
discovers that he has an evil personality, called Mr. Hyde. At the end, Dr.
Jekyll kills himself. This essay contains an analysis on the primary character
Mr. Hyde, his personality, physical appearance and the symbolism related to
him.
In connection
to his physical appearance, Mr. Hyde is presented as “the picture of
disquietude”, that might be because of his physical ugliness, repulsiveness and
the shocking effect he leaves on people: “Then he began slowly to mount the
street, pausing every step or two, and putting his hand to his brow like a man
in mental perplexity”. Likewise, the fact that he is hairy and dwarfish, in
addition to the impression of deformity Hyde gives, makes him look like a
beast, what could express his lack of humanity.
Talking
about his personality, Mr. Hyde is portrayed as an animalistic creature, as he
is uncivilized and immoral. Hyde, in addition, kills for no reason but the joy
of it, what proves he is no entirely an animal, as animals do not do that.
Moreover, Mr. Hyde has a cruel and violent personality: “And next moment, with
ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot, and hailing down a storm
of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jump upon
the roadway”.
In relation
to the symbolism connected to Hyde’s physical appearance, his ugliness and
deformity symbolize his lack of moral and ethics, while his small stature the
fact that he has been repressed for years and his hairiness, that he is Dr.
Jekyll’s animalistic side. As it can been seen in the next quote, Mr. Hyde was
growing: “The powers of Hyde seemed to have grown with the sickness of Jekyll”.
In
conclusion, Mr. Hyde is an animalistic creature who is really cruel and
violent, and we can appreciate that throughout the whole novel, in which this
character is developed all along the plot. Personally, I think that Mr. Hyde is
a great, very interesting character and one of the best characters to analyse.
He symbolizes the evil part of the society and humanity, as he is the evil part
of a very well-known man.

Short Story
We wrote a short story which had to have between 450 and 600 words and had to finish with the sentence "That was the last time he/she ever saw...".
Sophie was a 17-year-old, short, thin girl. She had long, black hair and big, round green eyes. She was a very good and generous girl who had lots of friends .Sophie lived in a spacious and luxurious house in the city of London with her father, her mother, her older sister and her little brother.
The Street
Sophie was a 17-year-old, short, thin girl. She had long, black hair and big, round green eyes. She was a very good and generous girl who had lots of friends .Sophie lived in a spacious and luxurious house in the city of London with her father, her mother, her older sister and her little brother.
One night,
she was walking down the avenue with a friend of her called Lucy. Lucy was 17
years old as Sophie and she was a tall girl, she had short, blonde hair and
blue eyes. After going to the shopping centre, they were going to a party which
was going to start in ten minutes.
“We are
going to be late!” complained Sophie
“No! It´s
early.” answered her friend
“We have
ten minutes left!” Sophie screamed “We have ten minutes to arrive there! And
the party is far from here!” She kept on complaining.
“Ok, calm
down.” answered Lucy “I know a shortcut, follow me.”
They kept on
walking down the avenue for one more block and then they turned left and
entered to a deserted, shabby little street. They walked through that alley as
they talked.
“The party
will be great! I can’t wait to get there!”, Lucy said, they were very excited
because of that party.
“Yes, me
too! How much time have we got to get there?”, she asked.
“Five
minutes.” answered the other girl.
“Ok.”, said
Sophie.
They kept on
walking for two or three more minutes when they passed through a darker part
and Sophie said:
“Hey, Lucy,
I don´t like this street.”
“But, if we
don´t come through here, we will be later.”, answered Sophie´s friend.
“Yes, I
know, but I just don´t like it. I don´t know why.”, answered the black-haired
one.
They
walked, walked and walked until they saw a man coming in front of them. He was
more or less a block ahead of them but they could perfectly see him.
“I don´t like
that man”, whispered Sophie, “Can we cross the street?”
“Ok.”,
answered her friend.
They
crossed the street, but the man also did that. That happened two or three times
until they realized that that man wanted to do something to them. They kept on walking,
frightened, until they faced the tall, filthy man.
“Give me
everything you have!”, he said quickly as he looked at them.
“Why?”,
asked Lucy while Sophie hit her and told her to shut up.
“Shut up
and give me everything! Or I’ll shoot you”, said the man as he took a gun out
of his jacket.
The girls
were really scared now, “Okay, okay”, they said as they gave their bags and
their cell phones to the man.
“Now, you
will go and you won’t look back”, the robber said.
The girls
went away in the opposite direction. They walked for more or less thirty meters
when Sophie made the mistake of turning around. She was only able to see the
robber, and to hear Lucy screaming when she heard a powerful sound and all
turned black.
That was
the last time she ever saw the robber. That was the last time she ever saw
Lucy. That was the last time she ever saw anyone.
