Do young people help the environment?

Write your opinion on the following: “Unfortunately, young people are not interested in helping the environment.”
  1. Follow the plan in Close Up, page 105.
  2. Use the Useful Expressions and underline them. Use colours.
  • Agreeing: 2 (two)
  • Disagreeing: 2 (two)
  • Comparing and contrasting: 3 (three)
  • Becoming more specific: 3 (three)

A drawing, representing the world's pollution problems.
Nowadays, young people are not interested in helping the environment. It cannot support the view that adolescents have towards taking care of our planet.

I fully agree with the statement that young people don't help the environment. In comparison to the past, people are lazier nowadays and, in fact, I believe that is the reason why they do not do anything for the environment.

A young woman throwing garbage out of her window.

I strongly disagree with the people who pollute the environment and could prevent it. Contrary to the past, currently we indeed contaminate more and, specifically, that is why I believe young people should be aware of helping the environment.

What people should do, and what people do.

To sum up, I fully support the idea that young people do not care about the environment, since, in contrast to people in other ages, they do not realize that they are damaging the environment, whe they shoul help it.

Literary Essay

We wrote a Literary Essay analysing rhe novel "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", by Robert Louis Stevenson, which had to have between 350 and 400 words aproximately.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, written by Robert Louis Stevenson, talks about a man called Dr. Henry Jekyll who wants to discover his other personality. He makes many experiments to achieve his aim. Finally, he discovers that he has an evil personality, called Mr. Hyde. At the end, Dr. Jekyll kills himself. This essay contains an analysis on the primary character Mr. Hyde, his personality, physical appearance and the symbolism related to him.

In connection to his physical appearance, Mr. Hyde is presented as “the picture of disquietude”, that might be because of his physical ugliness, repulsiveness and the shocking effect he leaves on people: “Then he began slowly to mount the street, pausing every step or two, and putting his hand to his brow like a man in mental perplexity”. Likewise, the fact that he is hairy and dwarfish, in addition to the impression of deformity Hyde gives, makes him look like a beast, what could express his lack of humanity.

Talking about his personality, Mr. Hyde is portrayed as an animalistic creature, as he is uncivilized and immoral. Hyde, in addition, kills for no reason but the joy of it, what proves he is no entirely an animal, as animals do not do that. Moreover, Mr. Hyde has a cruel and violent personality: “And next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot, and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jump upon the roadway”.

In relation to the symbolism connected to Hyde’s physical appearance, his ugliness and deformity symbolize his lack of moral and ethics, while his small stature the fact that he has been repressed for years and his hairiness, that he is Dr. Jekyll’s animalistic side. As it can been seen in the next quote, Mr. Hyde was growing: “The powers of Hyde seemed to have grown with the sickness of Jekyll”.

In conclusion, Mr. Hyde is an animalistic creature who is really cruel and violent, and we can appreciate that throughout the whole novel, in which this character is developed all along the plot. Personally, I think that Mr. Hyde is a great, very interesting character and one of the best characters to analyse. He symbolizes the evil part of the society and humanity, as he is the evil part of a very well-known man.

Short Story

We wrote a short story which had to have between 450 and 600 words and had to finish with the sentence "That was the last time he/she ever saw...".

The Street

Sophie was a 17-year-old, short, thin girl. She had long, black hair and big, round green eyes. She was a very good and generous girl who had lots of friends .Sophie lived in a spacious and luxurious house in the city of London with her father, her mother, her older sister and her little brother.
One night, she was walking down the avenue with a friend of her called Lucy. Lucy was 17 years old as Sophie and she was a tall girl, she had short, blonde hair and blue eyes. After going to the shopping centre, they were going to a party which was going to start in ten minutes.
“We are going to be late!” complained Sophie
“No! It´s early.” answered her friend
“We have ten minutes left!” Sophie screamed “We have ten minutes to arrive there! And the party is far from here!” She kept on complaining.
“Ok, calm down.” answered Lucy “I know a shortcut, follow me.”
“OK” Lucy answered.
They kept on walking down the avenue for one more block and then they turned left and entered to a deserted, shabby little street. They walked through that alley as they talked.
“The party will be great! I can’t wait to get there!”, Lucy said, they were very excited because of that party.
“Yes, me too! How much time have we got to get there?”, she asked.
“Five minutes.” answered the other girl.
“Ok.”, said Sophie.
They kept on walking for two or three more minutes when they passed through a darker part and Sophie said:
“Hey, Lucy, I don´t like this street.”
“But, if we don´t come through here, we will be later.”, answered Sophie´s friend.
“Yes, I know, but I just don´t like it. I don´t know why.”, answered the black-haired one.
They walked, walked and walked until they saw a man coming in front of them. He was more or less a block ahead of them but they could perfectly see him.
“I don´t like that man”, whispered Sophie, “Can we cross the street?”
“Ok.”, answered her friend.
They crossed the street, but the man also did that. That happened two or three times until they realized that that man wanted to do something to them. They kept on walking, frightened, until they faced the tall, filthy man.
“Give me everything you have!”, he said quickly as he looked at them.
“Why?”, asked Lucy while Sophie hit her and told her to shut up.
“Shut up and give me everything! Or I’ll shoot you”, said the man as he took a gun out of his jacket.
The girls were really scared now, “Okay, okay”, they said as they gave their bags and their cell phones to the man.
“Now, you will go and you won’t look back”, the robber said.
The girls went away in the opposite direction. They walked for more or less thirty meters when Sophie made the mistake of turning around. She was only able to see the robber, and to hear Lucy screaming when she heard a powerful sound and all turned black.
That was the last time she ever saw the robber. That was the last time she ever saw Lucy. That was the last time she ever saw anyone.

Review

The Hobbit 2
The hobbit: The desolation of Smaug is the second part of the saga directed by Peter Jackson. It is based on J. R. R Tolkien´s book “The hobbit”. It is an action film and the story takes place in the middle earth.
The hobbit is about a group of dwarves that, accompanied by Gandalf (a wizard) and Bilbo(The hobbit), want to go to the lonely mountain which is inside the city of Erebor. Inside it, there is a Dragon called Smaug. If they want the Erebor back, they will have to do something with Smaug.
The story is full of action and emotion. It is a very interesting and entertaining film, full of marvellous creatures and amazing landscapes. The movie is very good and has a lot of thrilling and exciting moments.
I strongly recommend you to watch this movie. You should watch it because it is excellent and it will catch your attention from the very beginning.

Monologue

In drama I created my own character. It is called “Alex”. I wrote a monologue to give him voice. This is me playing the role.

Monologue:
When I was a human I used to feel very bad, I felt that I was useless and that nobody wanted me, and that was horrible, I really suffered when I was a boy, and all because of that. It made me suffer because I believed nobody wanted and that I had no friends and it me made me feel I was alone, and that, actually, is horrible. Even more, my partners from my football club bothered me and I couldn´t stop going there.
But since I touched the metal cube in the laboratory when I was escaping from my partners, that were bothering me, it was all different, it´s all different now, I´m still very introvert and I’m not more self confident than I was before, but my partners stopped bothering me and I feel that I have more friends nowadays. I have to keep going to that club, my father wants me to do it, to go there, he wants me to be a great scorer and a great football player as him, maybe it´s because of that that I’m a goal-scoring machine, a perfect robot. About my “friends”, I won´t take revenge, no, maybe they deserve it, but I’m not that kind of person, if I’m still a person, but I won’t do it, I feel pity for them. I will only show them that I´m better than them.

Diary Entry

We wrote 2 diary entries as if we were Dr. Jekyll. The first one was before using the potion for the first time and the second one was after using it.

London
4th July, 1889
Dear diary:
I have just finished my potion, now I can see my evil personality!  I am so happy! I am very excited now, I cannot wait to drink it and to live as my evil part. It will be great! I do not know what I can do, and neither what I will do, but they will not be good things, it is an evil personality, not a good one. Definitely I will do bad things, and someone can catch me, but if I go out at night I will have the whole city for my own, and that will be fascinating (and also interesting). I have to avoid looking like both of my personalities, because they seem to have something in common and, also, I have to invent a name so they don’t recognize me, but, how can it be?… it will be as if I am hiding from the world, from the city, from society, so it can be related to that, so, it could be Mr. …Hyde. In this moment I am in my home waiting for my servant to go to sleep so I can drink the potion and se the effects.
Good-bye, Henry

London
6th July, 1889
Dear diary:
I had my first experience with the potion, two days ago. It was amazing! The potion worked perfectly! The effects were as I thought, my body was smaller than my original one and I was uglier, and more disgusting. I could do whatever I wanted and nobody recognized my, because, they could recognize me, maybe if someone saw me getting out of my house and thought it was me (Dr. Jekyll), equally, when I was coming home I entered through the back door, and I realized that I could use that one (nobody knows that the door is mine) I am also very happy because I can remember it all. When I started creating the potion, I was scared due to the fact that probably I could not remember what I would do as Mr. Hyde because, basically, we are two different people, but I could! I am writing to you from my lab, I just wanted to tell you how my experiences were and that I am going to repeat it tonight.

Good-bye, Henry

The Hobbit 2

The Hobbit 2

After the first part of the movie, Bilbo (the hobbit), Gandalf (a wizard) and the dwarves continued their adventure through the Middle Earth. They were escaping from a group of goblins that were chasing them, so they went to the house of a giant man who had the ability of turning into a gigantic bear. After spending the night there, they went into the Black Wood and got captured by the elves (Gandalf had left before entering the forest because he had to investigate something). When they escaped from the elves they reached a lake and asked a merchant to take them to the city in the lake. From there, they went to the Lonely Mountain and entered Erebor. Bilbo tried to steal the stone from Smaug, and the dwarves and the dragon had a fight. The dragon (Smaug) left the city and was going to attack the city in the lake. Nevertheless, this will be developed in the third and final part of the movie.

Our Myth

1st part: Martina.
2nd part: Belén.
3rd part: Tomás.
4th part: Azarías.

1st Part

Poseidon was the god of water and he was married to Athena, the goddess of wildlife. It was Poseidon’s wife birthday and he wanted to give her a very beautiful gift. so he started thinking what he could  buy to her. He thought of a necklace, a bracelet or earrings but he couldn’t decide .he didn't find the right gift to give her.

Poseidon said: “But I do not think that jewelry will be the perfect gift. It has to be special because she is special . What can I do? I don’t want her to be sad because I love her too much and as I said before, it has to be special”.

2nd Part

Poseidon: “Oh, my dear, your birthday is tomorrow and I don´t know what to give you. please, tell me what you want for your birthday”.
Athena: “Give me what you want, anything from you is ok”.
Poseidon: “give me an idea, something you like for example”.
Athena: “Everything you create or give me  will be enough for me”.

He thought all day and all night and he continued without knowing what to give her, but he decided it would have to be something special. so he decided to create something. He thought about something related to his son, Perseus, but he remembered that she told him not to involve him.
3rd Part

One day, Poseidon was walking on the streets of Athena and saw a fallen bucket leaking water. In that moment, he had a great idea. He would create something like that, but bigger, natural and with more water. He knew the right place to create it, so he went there immediately.
When he arrived at the mountain he saw a big place without trees an decided it was the right place to create it. He cut that part of the mountain so it became a cliff and created a river on top of it. The water started falling and made a lake. He watched it for some minutes and thought: “She will love it! But, how shall I name it? Ah, I know! This will be a “waterfall””.

4th Part

After he invented the first waterfall he went back home happily and ready to give his wife his present.”This waterfall Is very funny!  can you create another one? i love it! “ his friend ? said

“Well I am going to  try.

next month if I can do it, we will finish creating more. Only then, you can come”.

“Oh yes will be great! I will come with my family and we will distract and enjoy this beatiful waterfall.”

“Ok don't forget to come.”

“Next month we will finish with the watrefall so come.”

The Day the Mountain Blew Apart

  1. With Vicky Gregov we worked in class about the story "The Day the Mountain Blew Apart", inspired on Mount St. Helen, which erupted on Mat 18th, 1980.
  2. This story is an Historical Narrative. An historical narrative is a story of a historical event. The people and the places are true, but it is written as a story. An example of historical narratives might be biographies.
  3.                                                                      Introduction
    • Jerry Wheeler and David Johnston were in the mountain when it erupted.
    • Jerry survived and David died at the moment.
    • Magma had been rising inside the mountain, making a lot of pressure until it erupted.
    • It had the force of forty tons of dynamite.
    Consequences
    • All the place was destroyed and devastated.
    • 57 people died.
    • Everything was covered with ashes, smoke and fire.
    • The forest, plants and animals disappeared and died.
    • "Ghost Town": everyone stayed inside their houses| and didn't go out because they couldn't breathe.
    Coming back to life
    • Gophers helped because they brought the rich soil up to the surface, which helped new plants to grow.
    • Elk bones also helped new plants to grow because of the nutrients they had.
    • It will take more than a hundred years to have everything before it was before the eruption.

Mount St Helen before the eruption.
Mount St. Helen's crater.

Mount St. Helen, before and after the eruption.

5. I think this story doesn't look like a story, but it is a very good story and I really liked it and I learnt a lot about volcanoes.

Formal Letter

Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Thomas Johnson and last Monday I bought you a time machine online and it does not work well.
When I tried to put all the pieces together, there was one piece missing and I had to buy it. When I could put all the pieces together, I could not turn it on. When I could turn it on, it started making a strange noise for five minutes and then it turned off again.
I would like you to fix it. Please send me a letter answering to me if you will fix it. Write how much it costs, if you want me to give you the time machine or if you will come to my house to fetch it, and when you are going to fix it.
Thank you for your time and I hope you can solve this problem.
 Yours faithfully
Thomas Johnson
